IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #3

Tolerance that Atticus Finch displayed:

1. Atticus needed to endure all the criticism he received when he took up the Cunningham case.

This can be supported by: “‘Then why did Cecil say you defended niggers? He made it sound like you were runnin’ a still.’
Atticus sighed. ‘I’m simply defending a Negro...” pg 81 chapter 9.

This shows Atticus’ tolerance towards the criticism and that he was only doing his job.

2. Although Atticus did not win the case of Tom Robinson’s, he did not throw a fit or become very impatient and unmanly.

This can be supported by: “Atticus took his coat off the back of his chair and pulled it over his shoulder. Then he left the courtroom...” pg 217 chapter 21

This shows Atticus does not take further action to win the case.

3. Atticus shows tolerance to people, even people with problems in their mindset, although these people will try to do horrible things.

This can be supported by: “‘But last night he wanted to hurt you.’
Atticus placed his fork beside his knife and pushed his plate aside. ‘Mr Cunningham’s basically a good man,’ he said,’he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us.’” page 163 chapter 16

This shows Atticus’s tolerance to such people. Even though people might not like Atticus and does nasty things to him, Atticus readily forgave and tolerated those people.

4. Mr Bob Ewell spat in Atticus’ face but he  just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr Ewell call him names.

This can be supported by: ”Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr Ewell approached him, cursed him, sat on him and threatened to kill him” and “ Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr Ewell call him names” page 223 chapter 23.

This shows that Atticus had tolerated Mr Ewell’s action and did not do anything about it.

5. Atticus does not tell the children about his gun skills as he wants his children to be civilized and not to be hunters.

This can be supported by: “‘He never said anything about that,’ Jem muttered
‘Never said anything about it, did he?’
‘No ma’am.’
‘Wonder why he never goes huntin’ now,’ I said .
‘Maybe I can tell you,’ said Miss Maudie. ‘If your father’s anything, he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift of God, a talent - oh you, have to practise to make it perfect, but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things......”

This show Atticus actually wants his children to be more civilized like him and not take shooting to receive an unfair advantage over others.

Atticus is very tolerant and also always keep his cool. He defended Tom Robinson and when people called him names, he did not feel insulted and chosen to ignore them. When Scout beat up her friend because he called her father names, Atticus told Scout not to do such things again and not feel angry of her friend. And also when he lost the case and Mr Ewell spat on him, he did not fight back but just stay still and let Mr Ewell continue calling him names. This shows that Atticus respect others as he did not do anything when they call him names or spat on him.

Found Poem

Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley
Boo, sir, Boo, I find
what you are doing
in that spooky house of yours
where no one knows of you.

You rarely come out,
with the gates lock shut
and the doors all closed,
no windows left ajar.

One time you came out
with a gun in arms
when you have realised
someone went in your yard.

Then another time
when that fire arise
you came from behind
gave a blanket to us.

There is one more time,
when that mad dog came,
you were lucky then,
for Atticus had killed him.

One last time you came,
and this time you helped,
by rescueing Jem,
from the strangler Bob.

Boo, sir, Boo. I find
whatever you do
even in that house
your heart stays very nice.

Without reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" and just by reading this poem, I find that Boo is a mysterious, lonely person and hates the outside world. He hardly leaves the house and hence no one knows him. I also think that Boo is quite dangerous as when he realised someone is in his yard, he came out with a gun. However, in deep in his heart, I feel that Boo is kind. This is because he placed a blanket over Scout when she is watching the fire and also saved Jem from Bob.

Chosen sentence: Early in the morning when the sun has yet to rise, I would always breathe in the morning air which is as fresh as a daisy while strolling towards the bus-stop situated a distance away from my house.

Early in the morning when the sweltering sun has yet to appear above the horizon, I would always breathe in deeply the morning air which is as fresh as a daisy while strolling carefreely towards the bus-stop which seems to be a distance away from my house.

Early in the morning, before the sweltering sun has appeared above the horizon, I would leave my house to school. I would leave through the back gate of my condominium and walk towards the bus-stop. I would have to walk across a stretch of road as long as a snake.
Along the way, I would walk across a park. There, I can see many colourful flowers like the colours of the rainbow and also many bushy trees. The fragrance of the flowers are like perfumes and I would pause for a while to enjoy the scent of the flowers. Then, I would continue my way to the bus-stop after taking a look at the colourful playground. Once in a blue moon, I would be able to see children playing in the playground early in the morning.
As I walk across the park, I would take deep breath to be able to enjoy the morning air which is as fresh as a daisy. The morning air is very refreshing! Sometimes, I can see joggers jogging in the park and also people taking their dogs for a walk. Not knowing how long had just passed, I realised that I had just reach the bus-stop. I would turn around and bid farewell to the park, knowing that I would be able to see it again the next day.

Blog-Writing Prompt #10

My most vivid childhood memory is when I was about 5 years old. I remember my mother walking in a bookshop to find for some pens. Then I saw a nice pop-up sticker. I wanted my mother to buy for me but she say it was a waste of money. I was very disappointed. Then I thought of an idea to get that sticker. I look around to see that no one was watching me then I took the sticker and kept it in my pocket. I then pretended nothing had happened and remained calm. My sister saw what happened from behind and told my mother. My mother then reprimanded me and I had to return the sticker. From then, I promised my mother not to take anything that are not mine without permission.

Singapore Short Story Draft 2

Singapore in the future

Year 2488. What would Singapore become…?

It had been centuries since Singapore become an underwater city long before I was born. Due to greed, our ancestors had polluted and destroyed the environment by carrying out one of the many activities such as deforestation and the building of factories to increase productivity which were very profitable back then. It was because of the booming economy which makes them great money-making opportunities. For the sake of developing the country, the people had neglected the harmful effects of such activities. Over decades, as the vehicles on the road increase, it eventually leads to a serious air pollution which causes huge masses of dark clouds to fill the sky. Thus, the environmental condition was no longer suitable to support life.

Fortunately, the scientists had predicted this outcome year ago and after years of researching, they finally invented a impenetrable bubble that prevents anything from entering it and at the same time, it is able to provide endless supply of air to support the living things surviving in it. Each special bubble also known as the ‘crystal ball’ is able to hold more than 2 million people and several bubbles were built and placed beside each other. The bubble allows people to walk through without bursting it, hence it is easy to go from one bubble to another. Scientist also invented a special suit that would allow people to move normally like in land when in water without slowing down and also able to convert dissolved oxygen into oxygen. Hence people were able to move in water freely.

When I was younger, I was always curious about what is in the outside world. My grandfather was about 20 years old when the government wanted every Singapore citizens to shift in to the ‘crystal ball ‘as the environment outside was not suitable for living. My grandfather had experienced to outside world before and I would always ask him to tell me about it. I was very interested in the outside world but my parents would not let me go out as they say that it has been polluted and the air is not fresh hence if I went out, it would be very harmful to my health. Hence for a few centuries, not a single person ever dared to go out of the water.

One day, I went out of the ‘crystal ball’ to the sea to have a swim and relax myself. While swimming, I saw a sea turtle swimming. I was interested in knowing where he was going hence I followed him. I followed him for a while not knowing where I was going. Soon, as I was swimming, I was blinded by bright light. Out of curiosity, I swam upwards trying to find the source of the light. Finally, I reached the surface and found out that the bright light was the sun. When I realised that I had went up to the shore, I was shocked and felt scared. I look around and noticed that the environment was nowhere near what people had described the outside world of. There were no black clouds in the sky and the sky was clear. I walked forward and noticed that there were a lot of green trees and also many birds in the sky. The environment must have recovered on its own when we were not around. Amazed by this discovery, I immediately went back to the ‘crystal ball’ to tell my parents about my discovery. They were shocked at first and did not believe but finally I managed to convince them to follow me. When they arrived at shore, they were shocked beyond words. They immediately went back and told people about it.

Soon, everyone knew about it. People started to leave the ‘crystal ball’ to go to shore to witness it themselves. People finally get to know what it was like in the past. Some people even started to live here on the land. Now people would be able to live in both water and land and there will not be a problem of overcrowding. I hope that our generation would take good care of the environment and not follow the footsteps of our ancestors so that our future generations can have a better environment to live in.

Blog-Writing Prompt #9

My favourite movie is Nacho Libre which is a 2006 comedy. It is about a life Catholic priest who had a career as a masked luchador. He competed in order to support the orphanage he directed. I like this movie as it is very funny and interesting. The setting is in the monastery and the wrestling ring. In the monastery, there is many rules to obey and he dreams of becoming a luchador , but wrestling is forbidden by the monastery. Hence he changing his name to "Nacho" to keep his identity secret. In the wrestling ring, the way he fought does not seem professional and his actions are very funny. My favourite scene in the movie is in the wrestling ring as the way he fight is vey humourous hence when I watch that scene, I would always laugh.

Blog-Writing Prompt #8

My favourite character in To Kill a Mockingbird is Boo Radley. Although he is mysterious and seldom leaves the house, he is kind and forgiving. Jem and Dill would always try to attract him out using many different methods but he did not blame them and when Jem is in need of help like when he is in danger because of Ewell, he is still willing to help Jem although in the past Jem was rude to him. He also placed a blanket over Scout when she was watching the fire burning Miss Maudie's house and gave Jem and Scout some presents by leaving it in the tree. I think Boo Radley deserves more respect and people should not pass rumours of him if they do not know it is true or not.

Blog-Writing Prompt #7

My favourite fictional character is Jerry from Tom and Jerry. I am able to watch these shows when I go to my grandmother's house as my auntie bought alot of the CDs and left it in my grandmother's house for us to watch. Although Jerry is small mouse, he is very smart and brave hence when he is about the get bullied by Tom the cat, he would think of different ways to protect himself. He is memorable for me as he taught me that although you may look small and weak, you must not give in and get bully but be brave and think of ways to overcome it to protect yourself.

Curriculum of Identity

1. Think about how an individual's identity is shaped. What factors have led to the formation of your own identity?

The factors that led to the formation of your own identity are the environment, your behaviour and your personality. The people around you would normally influence you. For example, if your friends are playful, soon you would get influenced by them and also become playful. People would look at your behaviour to judge you. For example, if you behave badly, people would not really respect you and would not think highly of you. Your personality will normally determine your behaviour. For example if you are pleasant, you would not behave badly and hence people would have a better impression of you.

2. Search for three images (that are not a photograph of you) that you feel represent your identity, and post them into this entry.

IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #2

*Re-read Ray Bradbury's story "All Summer in a Day." In your blog, identify who should be held responsible for Margot's treatment, and why.

I would identify her parents, friends, teachers and also the environment in Venus to be held responsible for Margot's treatment. Her friends were more responsible for Margot's treatment.

Margot's parents are partly responsible for her treatment because they brought her from Earth to Venus and there is a great change in environment for Margot and she might not be able to adapt to it.

Her teachers are also responsible for her treatment as they did not try their best to stop her friends from bullying her or take extra care of her.

The environment in Venus are responsible for her treatment as it only stop raining and the sun appears once in seven years while in Earth, the sun is up most of the times so it is hard for her to adapt.

Her friends should be held the greatest responsibility for her treatment. They bullied Margot as they think she was different from them as she was from earth and saw the sun many times. This make her feel sad and lonely. Also, they locked her in the closet, making her unable to see the sun. She had been waiting for so long to see the sun but ended up locked in the closet, unable to see the sun.

LA-ACE

Then (in the same entry) imagine yourself as one of the schoolchildren; what might you have chosen to do which would have led to a positive outcome?

If I was one of the schoolchildren, I would not make fun of her just because she is different from the rest as she had saw the sun many times. If I find out that she was being bullied by the rest of the classmates, I would inform the teacher and her parents so they will understand her feelings, take better care of her and make sure her classmates would stop bullying her.
