IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #11 ( Speech )
Good Morning Mr Lundberg and fellow classmates. Osama bin Laden was the mastermind behind the September. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed thousands of Americans. On May 2, 2011, bin Laden was shot and killed inside a private residential compound in Pakistan, by U.S. Navy SEALs and CIA operatives. Today I would be talking about whether the US should have shown mercy towards Osama bin Laden by imprisoning him and letting him be tried or rather killing him on the spot.
Osama bin Laden is responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001. The attacks involved the hijacking of four commercial passenger aircraft, the subsequent destruction of those planes and the World Trade Center in New York City, New York, severe damage to The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the deaths of 2,974 people and the nineteen hijackers. The attack had caused much destruction and requires a lot of money to rebuild the damages. According to the Institute for the analysis of Global Security, counting the value of lives lost as well as property damage and lost production of goods and services, losses already exceed $100 billion. The attack also took away many innocent lives. Hence, I feel that he deserve to die and justice has been done by killing him on the spot as he should be showed no mercy for what he had done.
Osama bin Laden is the head of the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda and so there is much risk involved in bringing Osama bin Laden back to USA. It is because the members of al-Qaeda would try all ways to help Osama escape as he is their leader and so all the efforts put in just to capture Osama would be wasted. Then, it would be harder to recapture Osama as he would learn from his lesson and would not be captured easily like this time. This shows that by bringing Osama back to USA to be tried, there would be many deadly consequences and hence I feel that it is a right choice to kill him on the spot.
However, if Osama was being tried first before execution, USA would be able to prove his capture and also get more information about al-Qaeda. Many people suspect that Osama is not really dead as after he was killed, the body was disposed off almost immediately without photo documentation. Hence, by bringing Osama back to USA to be tried first, USA would be able to prove his capture and clear people’s suspicions. Also, by capturing Osama first, USA might be able to get more information about al-Qaeda. Hence, by bringing Osama back to USA to be tried first can bring about some benefits.
In conclusion, I feel that Osama bin Laden should be shot and killed on the spot as the deadly consequences would outweigh the benefits of bringing him back to USA to be tried first. Thank You!

I like your speech on the whole but the evidences were not very clear throughout your essay. I could not find your evidence for the third paragraph as you only elaborated on the point. Also, I your fourth paragraph is not well-supported with evidences thus I do not find convincing that many people suspect that Osama is not really dead. The president of the United States, Barack Obama, made a speech on television just to explain to the whole world that Osama is dead. If the president personally made the speech himself, I believe that the Navy SEALs examined the body very thoroughly before concluding that Osama is dead.
Though there are bad points, there are still good points. You explained the three points very well and there were not many grammar mistakes. On the whole, I liked your speech very much!
You have a great counter argument that Osama should be tried instead of killing him on the spot. However, as for your second point, wouldn't the members of Al-Qaeda be more angry by killing Osama instead of bringing him back to the United States? If Osama is killed, Al-Qaeda would know that there is no chance to get him back, but if he was not killed, at least they know he is alive and, as you mentioned, find ways to rescue Osama. So long as the US tighten their security, Osama would not escape, and may even catch the terrorists in their attempt to save Osama.

Your speech has many valid points, however, they are inadequately supported with evidence. Most of the evidence were only present in the first two paragraphs. Moreover, your last point was not very correct as the United States wanted to follow the customs which required disposing of the body as soon as possible. Thus, even if the people do not believe that Osama had died, there was nothing the public can do. Lastly, I feel that your view on not letting pictures or videos to be taken was mainly because if these videos or photos were released, they would be helping the terrorists to spread their cause and gain public sympathy.
Your speech is, in general, good in terms of the points made valid and supported. However, I would like to disagree where you said that the US may be able to extract valuable information from Osama. Osama has been trained not to reveal anything about Al-Qaeda, so even if the US did try to force something out of him, they are most likely to fail.
Dear Wei Jian,
That was a very nice speech. You had 3 clear and supporting points, gave some examples and provided us with much statistics. Firstly, I feel that, it would be better for you to state your stand in paragraph 1, than in paragraph 2. This would make things a bit clearer. I agree with all 3 of your points and I feel the that Osama bin Laden should be killed on the spot as while. I feel that the risks of bringing him back to USA is just too big of a risk to take. Overall, I feel that your speech was very well-written and I agree with your points.
Thank You
Your speech is good in terms of the points made valid and supported. However, I would like to disagree with you on what you said that being the mastermind, he should be killed on the spot. I think that it is very wrong for you to say that for no matter how much evil a person does, he should be given a chance for him to fight for his rights. The US should not had just killed him.
