Blog Writing Prompt #6

My favourite memory of Chinese New Year is when I was ten years old. My family would go to my auntie's company at seven in the morning and watch the lion dance performance. It was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much. Then, we would go to my grandmother's house to celebrate. All my relatives would be there to celebrate. Normally, when I was young, I would receive alot of red packet but as I grew older, the amount of red packet I received became lesser. My cousins and I would then enter a bedroom and spend our time inside watching television, playing computer and also some cards games. Time passes fast and soon it was seven at night. we would go to the living room and eat our dinner which is normally steamboat and some other types of food. It was very delicious. Although it was quite humid as many people were squeezing together , I enjoyed the atmosphere as we could sit and chat together. After eating dinner, we would watch the movie my uncle brought while eating some Chinese New Year goodies. Soon, it was past midnight and we would bid farewell to each other before going home.

I really enjoy Chinese New Year as I could spend time with my cousins, eat delicious food and also receive red packets. I hope that Chinese New Year would come soon.

2O4 Home Learning Online Lessons

1. Why did you choose these particular different pictures or background(s)?
2. How do these images contribute to your narrative elements (plot, setting, characterization, etc.)?
3. How did you make use of the different narrative elements to contribute to the theme you have chosen?

1. I chose these backgrounds because they seem to be more realistic. The first background is at the classroom where the boy and his classmate meet up and chat. The second background is when the boy is at home on the bed worrying that his friend would win him in the competition and trying to think of a way to stop his friend from participating. The third and forth background are the same, which is at a bridge where there is water below it when the boy and his classmate is walking to school. The boy is trying to kick his classmate into the water below the bridge but he missed as his classmate bends down and ended up falling into the water.

2. The images makes the story more interesting and attractive as it uses pictures more than words to explain the story so that it would not be so boring. By using images, it shows clearly the characters' actions, thoughts and also facial expressions.

3. I used the boy and his actions to contribute to the theme I have chosen. The boy is an example of someone who back-stabs his friends and commit wrongdoings just to try to win. The boy ends up falling into the water himself as people who do bad things would not have a good ending.

LA-ACE Blog post

2. Have you ever been part of a group of people who were unkind to one or some individuals? What was the circumstance? How did you act? What did you feel?

I have been part of a group of people who were unkind to someone. The group consisted of me and two other friends. We were in primary four and there is one particular boy we do not like. He always tops the class and we were all jealous of him. We always play pranks on him like pulling away his chair when he was about to seat and he landed up on the floor, hiding his pencil case and even call him names. But then as time passes I find that what we did was not right and I wanted to stop doing that but my friends threatened that if I stopped doing that, they would not be my friends and ignore me.
One day, I was about to leave to go to the canteen to eat during my recess when my friends stopped me. They told me that they had a plan and they intend to scribble on the front page of that boy’s activity books. I did not want to do it but they threatened me again so I had no choice. They say they would stand outside to guard the place to see if anyone was passing by. Hence, I followed their orders and started scribbling all over his activity books. Suddenly, I heard my name being called. I turned around and my jaws dropped when I saw my form teacher standing in front of me. I looked around trying to find my friends but they are nowhere to be seen. I realised that they must have run away when they saw our form teacher coming. I had no choice but to confess to my form teacher and he scolded me until my eyes turned red. I apologised to him and that boy and I had 5 demerit points while my friends had 3 demerit points. I was punished to do class duty for two whole months. From then on, I learned that my “friends” were not my true friends. I regretted doing all the bad things to the boy. I broke my relationship with them afterwards and even became friends with the boy. I feel very remorseful for all the things I had done and I hope I would not do it again.

IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #1

The song that has left the greatest impact on me is The Duck Song.

The link is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtN1YnoL46Q

A duck walked up to a lemonade stand
and he said to the man running the stand
Hey. got any grapes?

The man said no we just sell lemonade. It’s cold and its fresh and it’s all home made. Can I sell you glass? The duck said “I’ll pass”.
Then he waddled away. Till the very next day.

When the duck walked up to the lemonade stand
And he said to the man that was running the stand
Hey. You got any grapes?

The man said no, like I said yesterday, we just sell lemonade okay?
Why not give it a try? The duck said Goodbye.
Then he waddled away. He waddled away. He waddled away
Till the very next day.

When the duck walked up to the lemonade stand
And he said to the man that was running the stand
Hey. You got any grapes?

The man said look, this is getting old. Lemonade’s all we’ve ever sold. Why not give it a go? The duck said “No.”
Then he waddled away. He waddled away. He waddled away
Till the very next day.

When the duck walked up to the lemonade stand
And he said to the man that was running the stand
Hey. You got any grapes?

The man said THAT’S IT!! If you don’t stay away, duck, I’ll glue you to a tree and leave you there all day, stuck.
So don’t get to close! The duck said Adios.
Then he waddled away. He waddled away. He waddled away
Till the very next day.

When the duck walked up to the lemonade stand
And he said to the man that was running the stand
Hey. You got any glue?

What?

You got any glue?
No, why would I– Oh!

Then one more question for you:
Got any grapes?

And the man just stopped. Then he started to smile. Then he started to laugh. He laughed for a while.
Then he said, “Come on duck, let’s walk to the store. I’ll buy you some grapes so you won’t have to ask anymore.”

So they walked to the store and the man bought some grapes. He offered one to the duck and the duck said “No thanks”.

“But you know what sounds good? It would make my day.
Do you think this store, do you think this store, do you think this store… has any… lemonade?”

Then he waddled away. He waddled away. He waddled away.

I find this song very funny and also quite meaningful. The duck shows us his perseverance in asking the owner of the lemonade stand if he had any grapes although what he has done was not right as the duck was disturbing the owner. The duck is also very clever as when the owner of the lemonade stand said that he would glue the duck to the tree the next time the duck asked again and when the duck came the next day, he asked if he had any glue first before asking him if he had any grapes. Eventually the owner gave up and bought the duck a grape but the duck rejected it and even asked if that store sold any lemonade. I find that the duck had a sense of humour although he is disturbing other people and that is not right. From the owner of the lemonade stand, I learned that if there was a problem and if you keep trying to solve it using the same way but it keeps on occuring, like the owner keeps saying he do not have a grape and only had lemonade but the duck still keeps on pestering the owner for a grape, you should think of another solution to solve it, like the owner finally giving the duck a grape.

The Most Valuable Thing I Learned Last Year In Language Arts

The most valuable thing that I learned last year in Language Arts was poetry. I did not learn how to analyse poems in my primary school it was quite new to me. I learned about different poetic languages and also some poetic devices use in analysing poems like metaphors, similies, assonance, aliteration, irony and many more. Most of the poems I read is funny ,interesting and had some messages in the poem which I need to find out.Learning poetry is very fun and I really enjoyed it.

Poems by Shel Silverstein

The Little Boy and the Old Man by Shel Silverstein

1. Its conveys that the old man is like the little boy in certain ways although their ages may differ by a lot. Their thoughts and actions are alike and they might feel weak, helpless, lonely and needs attention.

2. Shel Silverstein used repetition to bring out this message more as it makes the poem more interesting. He used repetitive phrases like " I do that too " to bring out that the old and is like the little boy.

Messy Room by Shel Silverstein

1. The poem is humorous because at the start, the author was saying many negative comments about the owner of the messy room and said he should be ashamed of his room but it actually turns out to be himself.

2. The aspect of the human character that is highlighted in this poem is that people tend to blame others without even first understanding the whole story and also people tends to point out others mistake and feel that they should be ashamed of it but not actually realising that they too had made the same mistake and did not try to correct it.

Cloony The Clown by Shel Silverstein

1. The irony in this poem is that when Cloony the Clown tried to be funny, people did not laugh or think it was funny but when Cloony the Clown was serious and told them his tale of woe, people took it as a joke and laughed at it.

2. Shel Silverstein managed to convey some harsh realities in this poem. When some people try to be serious, they are not taken seriously and this would break their hearts as that is not what they wanted to happen.

3. The poet had used repetition like " Everyone felt a little sick ", " Everyone looked awfully blue and " And every time he did a trick" , " And every time he told a joke" and also " They laughed with howls and yowls and shrieks", " They laughed all day, the laughed all week". This emphasizes it and make the poet able to convey his message effectively. The poet also used assonance on the word at the end of the line and the last word on the next line like " clown"," town", " small", " all" and " head", " bed". This makes the poem more interesting.

I can identify Cloony The Clown with the most because the poet used a lot of poetic devices like repetition, irony and assonance.

My Favourite Book

My favourite book is Coraline by Neil Gaiman which is published in 2002. I like this book as the story is very interesting and keeps the reader in suspense and wants to continue to read. It is a fantasy story and contains a little adventure in it. It is about Coraline going to the " other world " and meets her other mother who wanted her to stay in the " other world " but Coraline refuses and went back to the real world. When she returned, she found out that her parents were missing and were mostly likely kidnapped by her other mother. Then, she went back and challenged her other mother, saying that if she could find the ghost children’s souls and her parents, her other mother must release her but if she loses, she would have to stay back and let her other mother sew buttons in her eye. With the help of the seeing stone given by Miss Spink, she managed to find the ghost children's soul and as she knew even if she wins, her other mother would still not let her go so she tricked her other mother saying that she knew her parents were behind the little door in the drawing room and when her other mother opens it, she throws the cat at her other mother and took the snow globe, which her parents were in, and escaped to the real world. She then cuts off her other mother's hand by closing the door on it. She knew the other mother's hand would steal the keys so she used the keys to lure the other mother's hand to the well and made it drop in the well. I find that Coraline is very clever, brave and would not give up easily.

Answers to Tim Burton film BIG FISH

1. The phrase "a big fish in a small pond" mean to me that a person is very different from the rest and is standing out from the rest of the people.

2. The purpose of Edward Bloom's tall tale about the big fish and the wedding ring is to impress others and make his family proud of him.

3. When William Bloom was a boy, he was amazed and interested in the tale but as he gets older, he starts to feel annoyed and feel that the tale was not true and his father's telling of the tale was an embarressment to him and his father.

4. Edward Bloom wanted to keep repeating the tale throughout his life because he wanted his son to feel proud of him and wanted to improve his relationship with his son.

5. The relationship between Edward and William Bloom became strained as William feels that his father was telling a not realistic tale.

6. Stories that were exaggerated match this description. The effect of telling a story in this way makes it more interesting but also make people feel suspicious of it.

7. Bending or exaggerating the truth for the purpose of conveying an entertaining story does undercut the believability of such a story. A tall tale is less valid than a straight reportage of the facts because it makes people create suspicion about it and makes the tale not realistic nor believable.
