T3 Blog Prompt #4B

"Largely as a result of sex-selective abortions, Asia today is short 160 million women. They have disappeared silently over several decades, but their absence can be seen in classrooms filled with boys, in huddles of bachelors on city streets and in higher rates of bride trafficking and prostitution elicited by growing numbers of sexually frustrated men."
What will be the effect on Asian society by such a large gender imbalance if this trend continues? Write in SEE format.

I feel that if this trend continues, many problems would be created. Firstly, there would be more crimes committed. Secondly, the population of the country would be affected. Lastly, the economy would be affected.

Firstly, there would be more crimes committed. It is because there would be an increase number of cases of traffickers being paid to abduct women to be sold on as brides or even forced into prostitution due to the growing numbers of sexually frustrated men. There has been a sharp increase in trafficking of women from other Asian countries into China. Many young girls and women have been kidnapped, and then either sold on as brides to Chinese men or coerced into working as prostitutes. Human trafficking and prostitution can lead to an increasing crime rate and a range of social problems that could undermine social stability and the business environment in China. This shows that if this trend continues, there would be more crimes committed.

Secondly, the population of the country would be affected. Experts say Chinese parents have resorted to sex-selective abortion to ensure their child was a boy since the one-child policy was introduced. Time Magazine stated that the sex ratio in China is 121 boys for every 100 girls. Hence it would lead to more men unable to find a wife and hence would cause the population to decrease due to the declining birth rate.

Lastly, the economy would be affected. Due to the decrease in population, there would be lesser workforce and hence the economy would be affected. Also, the economy would also be affected due to high crime rates caused by the gender imbalance. For example, tourism would be affected as lesser tourist would go to a country with high crime rates as they fear that something might happen to them during their stay in that country. Hence, these shows that the economy would be affected.

In conclusion, gender imbalance would create many problems like higher crime rates, population would decrease and the economy would be affected. Hence, it is important to ensure that the sex ratio is equal to prevent such problems from happening.
