IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #9
War Poetry
War Poem about World War II
Life then was definitely the worst.
Many people died of thirst,
many people died of hunger,
leaving behind only fear and anger.
Many brave souls who volunteered to fight,
ended up with a sorry plight.
Missiles were fired,
bombs were dropped.
Gunshots were heard,
lives were lost,
all were in ruins.
Death counts were rising,
and bodies were piling.
Hoping that life would be better,
once the World War II ends.
Reading & Reasoning Exercise: War Poetry
1)He is describing the cannons.
2)The “jackies” are the soldiers. It is to raise their morale.
3)The shovel is brother to the gun because when a gun is used, a shovel would be required. During a gunfight, many would lose their lives, hence there is a need for a shovel to bury their bodies.
4)The significance is to show that during and after wartime, soldiers and civilians had to obey the persona’s commands, even against their will. The workmen and civilians build the city for ages, only to have them destroyed by the soldiers in minutes. Furthermore, they have to restore the city to its original state.
5)The effect is that it makes us think that the persona is unreasonable. The persona’s attitude towards the soldiers and civilians is that he did not spare a thought for them as after he commands the soldiers to destroy the buildings, he wanted the civilians to rebuild it, without considering how much effort was needed.
6)I think that building a society back up again is harder. An example is the recent Fukushima nuclear meltdown. The nuclear power plants were destroyed in a blink of an eye by the tsunami and earthquake. However, much effort was needed to rebuild the nuclear power plants. It has been four months since this incident but until now, it is still not fully repaired yet. Hence, this shows that building a society back up again is harder than tearing down a society.
7)In old wars, there was more noise. In the new wars there is lesser noise. However, in the wars to come, there would not be any noise. This shows that as time progress, the amount of sound in a war is reduced due to the improvement of technology.
8)One “king” that has been “kicked under the dust” in recent times is the fourth President of Egypt Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak. The 2011 Egyptian revolution took place following a popular uprising. The uprising was mainly a campaign of non-violent civil resistance, which featured a series of demonstrations, marches, acts of civil disobedience and labour strikes. Million of protesters demanded the overthrow of the regime of Hosni Mubarak. The grievances of Egyptian protesters were focused on legal and political issues, including police brutality, state of emergency laws, lack of free elections and freedom of speech, uncontrollable corruption, economic issues like high unemployment, food price inflation and low minimum wages. This is an example of a “king” that has been “kicked under the dust”.
War is definitely a terrible experience. It caused the sufferings of many people. It caused people to live in fear of being killed everyday. Many innocent civilians had been killed and many had died due to the lack of food and water during wartime. I wonder why people would go to war... is it for resources, territories, revenge or what? What is more important than the lives of people. It had caused so much deaths! However, many patriotic heroes would rise. They would fight till death for their country and not surrender. I feel that we had much to learn from their fighting spirit. I feel that war should have been avoided. War had created much troubles and everyone would suffer. Greed and vengeance had caused the losing of many lives and happiness. I feel that it is not worth it! I hope that there would not war in the future as it would definitely create much destruction.
